JoSAA (the Joint Seat Allocation Authority) runs one combined counselling process for the IITs, NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes. You register once, rank your choices, and seats are allotted round by round on your JEE Main or JEE Advanced rank. Here is how it works and where students go wrong.
Who takes part
- IITs — seats allotted on JEE Advanced ranks
- NITs, IIITs and other government-funded technical institutes (GFTIs) — seats allotted on JEE Main ranks
- B.Arch and B.Planning at NITs and SPAs — on JEE Main Paper 2 ranks
If you qualified for JEE Advanced, you can fill choices for both IITs and NITs in the same registration.
The steps
- Register and fill choices on the JoSAA portal after the JEE Advanced result. A choice is a specific programme at a specific institute (for example, B.Tech Electrical at NIT Warangal).
- Check the mock allotments. JoSAA publishes mock results based on the choices filled so far, so you can see roughly where you stand and reorder before locking.
- Lock your choices before the deadline.
- Rounds of seat allotment. In recent years there have been five or six rounds. After each round you must respond, or you lose the seat.
- Accept the seat online: upload documents, pay the seat acceptance fee and choose Freeze, Float or Slide.
- Report to the institute when it calls you, with original documents.
Freeze, Float and Slide
After you get a seat, you tell JoSAA what to do in later rounds:
| Option | What it means | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Freeze | Keep this seat; stop considering you for anything else | You're happy with it |
| Float | Keep this seat, but upgrade to any higher choice at any institute if one opens | You'd prefer a better institute or branch |
| Slide | Keep this seat, but upgrade only to a higher choice at the same institute | You like the institute but want a better branch there |
If you're upgraded, your earlier seat is released — you can't go back to it.
How to fill choices well
- Fill many choices. Students who list only a handful often end up with nothing. There is no penalty for listing more.
- Order by true preference. You'll be offered the highest choice your rank allows, so put what you really want first, even if it seems a stretch.
- Use the home-state quota. At most NITs, half the seats are reserved for students from that state. Your rank can go much further at your home-state NIT.
- Decide branch versus institute in advance. Would you take a less popular branch at a top institute, or your preferred branch somewhere else? Settle this as a family before choice filling, not at midnight before the deadline.
- Read the previous year's opening and closing ranks on the JoSAA website to see what's realistic.
CSAB special rounds
After JoSAA ends, CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) runs special rounds to fill vacant seats at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs (not the IITs). If you didn't get a seat, or want a better one, register for CSAB when it opens.
Common mistakes
- Missing the online reporting deadline after a round, which cancels the seat
- Name or category details on the certificate not matching the JEE application
- An OBC-NCL or EWS certificate in the wrong format or for the wrong year
- Choosing Freeze too early when a better seat was likely
JoSAA is free and designed to be done by students themselves. A counsellor's value is in helping you rank choices sensibly and keep your documents in order — never in "arranging" a seat.
