Engineering and technology

Engineering in India usually means a four-year B.Tech or B.E. after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Government seats at IITs, NITs and IIITs are filled through JEE Advanced or JEE Main and JoSAA counselling; state colleges use state counselling, and many private universities run their own tests.

Management and business

Management has two entry points: a BBA, BMS or integrated programme after Class 12, and an MBA or PGDM after graduation. MBA admission at the IIMs and other leading B-schools runs on CAT, XAT and similar tests, followed by each institute's own interviews.

Medicine and dentistry

MBBS, BDS and AYUSH degrees in India are open only through NEET-UG. After the result, seats are allotted through MCC counselling (All India Quota, deemed and central institutes) and state counselling (state quota and private colleges). No legal admission route skips NEET.

Law

You can study law straight after Class 12 through a five-year integrated programme (BA LLB and similar), or after graduation through a three-year LLB. National Law Universities admit through CLAT, NLU Delhi through AILET, and many private law schools through their own tests.

Commerce and economics

B.Com and economics degrees are three-year programmes (four years with honours) after Class 12. Central universities such as Delhi University admit through CUET-UG; many state and private colleges admit on Class 12 marks or their own tests.

Arts, humanities and social sciences

BA and BA (Hons) programmes cover subjects such as English, history, political science, psychology and sociology. Central universities admit through CUET-UG; liberal arts universities use their own holistic processes.

Science

B.Sc programmes in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and related subjects run three years (four with honours). Central universities admit through CUET-UG; IISERs and similar institutes run research-focused BS-MS programmes with their own entrance.

Computer applications and IT

BCA and B.Sc Computer Science are three-year degrees (four with honours) after Class 12, usually followed by an MCA or M.Sc. Most admissions are through university tests, CUET-UG or Class 12 merit rather than JEE.

Nursing and allied health

Nursing, physiotherapy and allied health programmes train the professionals hospitals run on, from nurses to lab and imaging technologists. Admission is through institute tests, state counselling, NEET-UG at some institutes, or Class 12 marks.

Pharmacy

B.Pharm is a four-year degree after Class 12 with science; D.Pharm is a two-year diploma, and Pharm.D a six-year clinical programme. Admission is through state entrance tests, university tests, CUET-UG or merit, depending on the college.

Design

Design degrees (B.Des and M.Des) cover product, communication, fashion, interaction and other specialisations. NID uses its Design Aptitude Test, the IITs use UCEED, and NIFT runs its own entrance — most of them accept Class 12 students from any stream.

Architecture and planning

B.Arch is a five-year degree after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. You need a NATA or JEE Main Paper 2 score: NITs and SPAs use JEE Main Paper 2 through JoSAA, while most other colleges accept NATA.
